How does the service work?

Mixed Recycling Sack

Mixed Recycling sacks are delivered the next day and collected daily from outside your business. They are taken to a state- of-the-art materials recovery facility where the materials are sorted and graded into 14 different streams, ready for recycling into new products.

What happens to Mixed Recycling?

Your Mixed Recycling is collected by our carbon neutral fleet and taken for sorting at a state-of-the-art material recovery facility.

The facility uses high tech systems to sort your recyclable material into 14 different streams. A wide range of technology is used to separate materials, including infrared systems to identify plastic types and eddy currents to separate metals. Material is then collected, baled and sent to be recycled into new products.

Stationery Recycling

How does the service work?

Stationery Recycling

Stationery Recycling Sacks hold 5kg of stationery and are provided in packs of 5 alongside a desktop Stationery Recycling bin. They are collected upon request from inside your building and are then sent for recycling or reuse.

Unwanted or broken stationery is either recycled into new products or sent for reuse at local schools.

What happens to Stationery Recycling?

General Waste Recycling

General Waste sacks are delivered the next day and collected daily from outside your business. They are transported by barge to a state-of-the-art energy recovery facility where the waste is incinerated to produce clean energy.

What happens to General Waste?

General Waste Recycling

The energy recovery facility incinerates waste to generate heat and steam, which in turn generates c470,000MWh of electricity every year and powers over 100,000 homes.

Gases are treated and neutralised and discharged safely into the atmosphere.

Any leftover material (ash) is used as an aggregate to build roads all over the UK.

Cardboard Recycling

How does the service work?

Cardboard Recycling

Cardboard Recycling stickers are delivered the next day in rolls of 50. Simply flat pack and tie together 5kg of cardboard (roughly 5 large boxes) and stick on one First Mile Cardboard Recycling Sticker.

Recycling 1 tonne of cardboard saves 13 trees, 400 litres of oil, 4,100 kw of electricity and 31,000 litres of water!


What happens to Cardboard Recycling?

Cardboard bundles are collected daily from outside your business and taken for recycling at a state-of-the-art pulping facility. Here, cardboard bundles are pulped and recycled back into new products.

Paper Recycling

How does the service work?

Closed Loop Paper Recycling

If you choose to recycle your paper in Mixed Recycling Sacks, these are collected daily from outside your business and are taken for sorting and reprocessing at a materials recovery facility.

Our recycled paper is made from 100% recycled office paper, has a high level of whiteness (CIE 15) and is mono laser and inkjet guaranteed. Call us for a free sample.

Food Recycling Sacks are delivered the next day and collected daily from outside your business, at the same time as your Mixed Recycling and General Waste sacks. Food Recycling is taken to an anaerobic digestion plant where is it used to make electricity and a nutrient-rich fertiliser.

What happens to Food Recycling?

Food Recycling is taken for anaerobic digestion at a state-of-the-art anaerobic digestion plant. Here, using the process of anaerobic digestion, food and organic waste is used to create electricity and a nutrient rich fertiliser.

Confidential Recycling

How does the service work?

Confidential Recycling

Each 25kg Confidential Recycling Sack is delivered with a uniquely numbered secure tag. When the sacks are full, our vetted drivers will collect from inside your office. Confidential Recycling Sacks are taken to a secure facility where they are securely destroyed and a certificate of destruction is issued for each sack.

What happens to Confidential Recycling?

Confidential Recycling Sacks are taken to a BS15713-accredited secure destruction facility where they are securely shredded and pulped. The leftover material is then recycled into new products, including premium white copier paper, which you can purchase through our closed-loop Paper Recycling service.

Electrical Recycling

We'll deliver your Electrical Recycling Sacks or Stickers the next day and collect from inside your business. Your electrical items are taken to an authorised treatment facility where they are dismantled into the raw materials and sent for recycling into new products.

Toner & Cartridge Recycling

Toner & Cartridge recycling sacks are an easy way of recycling your used or unwanted toners and cartridges. Sacks are delivered the next day and collected when full from inside your workplace. Toners and Cartridges are taken for recovery at a local facility and donated to Sparks Children Charity.

Toners & Cartridges are taken for sorting at a local recovery facility. Empty toner bottles are sent for recycling and cartridges are refilled and sent to Sparks Children's Charity. Sparks sell the cartridges and the profits are used to fund pioneering medical research into various illnesses affecting children and babies.

How does the service work?

Battery Recycling

Battery Recycling Sacks are provided in packs of five and are delivered the next day. Battery Recycling Sacks hold 5kg of batteries and are collected upon request from inside your building.

Recycling your batteries will prevent them from ending up in landfill, where they can leak harmful chemicals into the soil.

What happens to recycled batteries?

Battery Recycling Sacks are taken to the specialist Battery Recycling centre, GPT Batteries, where they are broken down and separated into lead, heavy metals, plastic and acid. Chemicals, metals and plastics are then sent for reuse and recycled into new products.

First Mile's Fluorescent Tube & Bulb Recycling Box holds up to 40 fluorescent tubes. Fluorescent Tube & Bulb Recycling Boxes are delivered the next day and collected upon request from inside your building.

Fluorescent tubes and light bulbs are taken for recycling at a RecoLight recycling facility where they are recycled into new materials and products.

Fluorescent tubes and light bulbs are taken to Recolight, a specialist recycler. Here, the recycling process extracts mercury, lead and glass which are sent for recycling into new products.

How does the service work?

Fluorescent Tube & Bulb Recycling

If you choose to recycle small amounts of glass in Mixed Recycling Sacks, these are collected daily from outside your business and are taken for sorting and reprocessing at a materials recovery facility. Large amounts of glass are taken to a glass recovery factory where they are recycled and turned into new glass bottles, jars and containers.

It takes 40% less energy to create 1 tonne of glass using recycling material.

When glass is collected from your business in Mixed Recycling sacks, it is taken for sorting at a materials recovery facility where it is recovered and sent for remanufacture into new glass bottles and jars. Textile Recycling

We deliver Textile Recycling Sacks to you the next day and collect from inside your workplace. Textile Recycling Sacks are sent for recycling with TRAID and material is reused or sent for remanufacture into new products.

Every year in the UK, TRAID divert around 3,000 tonnes of clothes from landfill and incineration, reducing waste, carbon emissions and textile consumption.
