Experts in the industry

To ensure our staff have a great knowledge of the waste industry every new starter undertakes a certificate in waste, approved by the Chartered institution of Waste management. The training course covers compliance, waste prevention and key legislation, giving staff the knowledge to help with any situation:  

Receiving an accredited CIWM certificate in waste has provided me with the knowledge to better explain the value behind our service to potential planet savers. I now also have a better understanding of the best ways to overcome the challenges threatening our environment

We also provide support for those that need to develop extra knowledge for specific roles at First Mile.

Since joining First Mile, Sarah’s role has developed and changed to include social media marketing and with limited experience in the past, she was able to gain confidence from completing a Diploma in Social Media Marketing:

Developing skills

We also know it’s important to have skills as well as knowledge, some of which, such as management, are essential across all departments.

A large number of managers within First Mile are internally promoted, often becoming managers for the first time. To ensure they all have the skills to run effective teams, this year some of the managers are enrolled onto a 12-month programme. This focuses on different elements of management, such as personal development and performance management. The course provides in-depth knowledge on management theory, such as the GROW technique, and then demonstrates how this integrates with managers day to day work.

You get to focus on your own techniques in the training and learn how to use the theory and put it into practice. Courses such as this provide you with the confidence in the skills that you have

Other essential skills, such as excel, are a large part of certain roles at First Mile. As part of the partnerships team, Rosie performs a lot of data analysis, vital for proposal writing and data management. To improve her skills, Rosie was signed up to a 10 week excel business course at City University over the summer. The course gave Rosie a great overview on what Excel do and explained key functions in greater detail:

I’m now able to see how I can use these skills in multiple scenarios and have been able to develop multiple tools for others in the business to use, making our work more accurate and efficient

As excel is a key skill for many roles, Rosie is now providing internal training on key elements during ‘lunch and learn’ sessions. This gives people the option to learn about new topics and skills during their lunch time, for additional learning and development opportunities.

All staff at First Mile are encouraged to ask about training opportunities, from fully accredited qualifications to shorter online course. There is great support throughout the teams to help staff with their training and personal development and to help them build relevant skills and knowledge for their roles.
