We work with partners from the best materials recovery facilities (or MRFs for those who like short sentences), to amazing innovators. Anyone who can help us build a world where businesses can recycle everything.
We help businesses save the planet by recycling as much as possible and sending nothing to landfill.
We’re pretty good at recycling our own waste too, if we do say so ourselves, and work hard to make sure our carbon emissions are as low as possible.
But you can’t collect waste without trucks. We use advanced technology to ensure our routes are as efficient as possible. We help partners like Business Improvement Districts consolidate their members’ suppliers and reduce vehicle emissions on their streets. But this still isn’t enough to deliver the UKs only carbon neutral, zero-to-landfill recycling service.
In February 2015 we started working with Carbon Clear to offset all the carbon emissions that we can’t avoid yet.
We support their Landfill Gas Project in Liaoning Province China. This captures methane from a landfill site in this industrial region. The captured gas is used to produce electricity, rather than escaping into the atmosphere. The project offsets our carbon emissions, and makes a real contribution to the environmental improvement of the area.
The UK gets through 2.5 billion paper cups every year. Despite being recyclable, the majority end up in landfill where they release harmful greenhouse gases and contribute to climate change.
As a founding member of the Paper Cup Recovery and Recycling Group (PCRRG), First Mile is committing to helping businesses reduce their environmental impact through encouraging paper cup recycling. Partnering with the likes of bio bean, Starbucks, Costa and Cafe Nero, we’ve pledged to engage and collaborate to find a real solution to paper cup waste in the UK.
The group’s primary objectives are to encourage the recycling of paper cups and identify and support ways of transforming used paper cups into a sustainable, valuable resource.
Recycling everything means working with the best partners, and always being on the lookout for new recycling technologies.
bio-bean are an award winning green energy company who have industrialised the process of recycling waste coffee grounds into advanced biofuels.
They divert some of the 500,000 tonnes of waste coffee grounds produced by our national coffee habit from landfill. They will save the economy millions of pounds in waste disposal fees, and save millions of tonnes of CO2 from being emitted.
In 2015 they were on the lookout for partners to collect coffee grounds for them. They wanted to work with a recycling or waste business that already had trucks on the ground, so their business didn’t increase vehicle emissions.
That’s where we come in. Our daily coffee recycling collection route launched in September 2015. We now collect nearly 4 tonnes of waste coffee grounds in London monthly.
We’re always glad to hear from any innovators who want to get the UK’s businesses recycling even more.
