When food waste rots in landfill, it releases lots of nasties. Methane in particular. Methane has a greater global warming effect than Carbon Dioxide. That’s why putting organic waste in landfill will probably be made illegal soon.
If you use First Mile and put your food waste in your general rubbish bin, we make sure it doesn’t go to landfill. But there’s an even better way to handle your food waste.
First Mile will collect your business food waste and take it for recycling into electricity and fertiliser.
Our partners use Anaerobic Digestion to recycle food waste. You might not find your food waste tempting to eat, but a whole host of cute microorganisms do. The calorific food waste is pumped into a sealed, oxygen-free tank, where the hungry bacteria hoover it up and release biogas.
The biogas is captured in the tank, and is a renewable source of fuel for combined heat and power units which generate green electricity and heat.
The by-product of this process is nutrient rich fertiliser which can be used on farms. That’s why our partner’s facilities are located on large farms where they have long term contracts to supply the farm with fertiliser. That way your food waste only makes one journey to the plant. No second journey to take the products to market is needed. And that means carbon emissions are kept as low as physically possible.
For you it’s easy. Just order food recycling bags and leave them outside when full. We’ll collect them at the same time as your other business recycling and waste.
